Phenolic resin is also called bakelite, also known as bakelite powder. It used to be colorless or yellowish brown transparent material. It is usually sold in red, yellow, black, green, brown, blue and other colors with colorants, and it is in the form of particles and powder. It is resistant to weak acid and alkali, decomposes in case of strong acid and corrodes in case of strong alkali. Insoluble in water, soluble in acetone, alcohol and other organic solvents. Phenol is polycondensated with formaldehyde. It includes: linear phenolic resin, thermosetting phenolic resin and oil soluble phenolic resin. It is mainly used in the production of pressed plastic powder and laminated plastic; the manufacture of varnish or insulating and corrosion-resistant coating; the manufacture of daily necessities and decorations; the manufacture of sound insulation and heat insulation materials, etc. The common high-voltage electrical socket, furniture plastic handle and so on, called PE for short. Phenolic resin is yellow, transparent, amorphous block material, which is reddish due to the presence of free molecules, with a specific gravity of 1.25-1.30, easily soluble in alcohol, insoluble in water, stable to water, weak acid, weak alkali solution. The resin is made of phenol and formaldehyde by polycondensation, neutralization and water washing under the condition of catalyst. Due to the different selection of catalysts, they can be divided into two types: thermosetting and thermoplastic. Phenolic resin has good acid resistance, mechanical properties and heat resistance. It is widely used in anti-corrosion engineering, adhesives, flame-retardant materials, grinding wheel manufacturing and other industries. Phenol formaldehyde resin is the first industrial synthetic resin.
